Plasma televisions, in our opinion is the absolute best way to go when it comes to television. Plasma offers better contrast, better colour reproduction, and, ultimately, a better picture on "Standard Definition" (regular cable or satellite) broadcasts.
The black levels on a plasma are better because black is the absence of light. When there is black on the screen, the phosphor is not lit. The black levels are dependent on how black the actual panel is. (Just like your old CRT) LCD TV's use light to make black....hmmmm...that doesn't sound right does it?
Plasma got a bad rap in the early days for a few inherent problems they HAD. ALL those problems have now been rectified on a better quality panel.
The only real negative, is that in a VERY brightly lit room, plasma doesn't work to it's full potential and you may see some picture wash out or possibly some glare or reflection. In general, most of the plasma manufacturers have added anti-glare/anti-reflective screens.
LCD's are the most popular choice for TV's....and I can't figure out why. They certainly don't make a better picture than plasma. They aren't any less expensive. So, what's the deal with LCD. Well, the honest truth is that the LCD manufacturers are throwing money at big companies to support their product. Whether it be through spiff programs for the salesperson, or giving an additional "back end" discount to the retailer, etc.
The only real advantage LCD has over plasma is that it does offer a picture that is less affected by bright light. There is LESS glare and wash out, but is not completely immune to bright light issues.
Stop believing everything they tell you at B&^T Buy and Fu$%reshop. And please...please...please take what you read on the Internet with a grain of salt. Review sites are fine, but ultimately, let your eyes decide what product is best for you. At Just HiFi, we'll listen to your needs, and show you products based on that information.
LED is still LCD, but with better back lighting. Instead of halogen bulbs, they are using LED's. LED's offer better a better light... sorry... a WHITER light. Halogen always had a tinge of blue. That, has now been changed to LED.
However, beware of one of the two competing companies when it comes to LED technology. One company Sa&^ung, is using "side lit LED's" While Sharp, is offering clustered backlit LED's.
By backlighting, you're getting a better coverage of light, and not sidewashing the picture so it's brighter on the sides than in the middle.
Earlier I said that LED is still LCD. Yes, it is. The only thing that changed is the backlighting. They still use LCD's to make the colour and ultimately the picture. They still aren't as good as plasma and still the processors aren't as fast.
So, when you're shopping for that new television, drop in and see us. We'll show you all the options, and listen to your needs and requirements and then we can make the decision based on that. Not on what is best for us, but what is best for YOU!
